SCIENCE REVEALS ROOIBOS AS STAR INGREDIENT FOR SKIN HEALTH
With the every expanding beauty industry, consumers are bombarded with more and more novel botanical ingredients, with the premise of rejuvenation. But as the gap between ‘natural’ and ‘high tech’ beauty diminishes, savvy consumers are demanding to know the science behind active ingredients.
MAYSAMA have been working with the Nelson Mandela Institute in South Africa to look at the cosmetic potential of rooibos and the skincare brand’s findings are quite remarkable. The outcome led Beverley Sanderson to launch her brand MAYSAMA and her first product, MAYSAMA Green Rooibos Pressed Serum, stars green rooibos as an Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient.
Rooibos, Aspalathus linearis, better known as redbush tea to its tea drinking devotees, has long been recognised for its health and healing properties. But now you don’t have to drink it to see benefits for your skin.
‘I have long been a consumer of redbush and green rooibos tea. Its anti-inflammatory properties have helped to manage my rosacea. But its skin healing properties have a place in our skincare routine too.’
The fermentation process used in the production of red rooibos destroys up to 90% of the aspalathin, the main flavonoid responsible for its antioxidant properties. Green rooibos has a much higher antioxidant capacity because the flavonoids have not been destroyed by oxidation. MAYSAMA’s green rooibos powdered extract has a patented extraction process that gently concentrates the aspalathin content, to produce an active ingredient with far greater potency.
Antioxidants are known to protect against oxidative stress which, left unchecked, contributes to skin aging. That said, not all antioxidants are bioavailable or bioactive. Many antioxidants can ‘scavenge free radicals’ but antioxidants must first permeate the cell membrane and accumulate within the cell to be bioavailable, and then perform their antioxidant function inside the cell, where free radicals are produced, to be bio-active.
MAYSAMA’s collaboration with the NMI University, demonstrated beyond doubt that their pharmaceutical grade green rooibos has superior bioavailability and is a true bioactive ingredient.
‘Our studies show that our green rooibos API ingredient is just as potent as green tea and, what’s more, it works in the same way. Like green tea, not only does rooibos scavenge free radicals directly, but it also stimulates the natural antioxidant pathways that exist within a cell.’
This dual antioxidant function to protect against environmental aggressors appears unique to tea extracts and was not seen in Resveratrol, Vitamin E or other well-known antioxidants also tested in the study. ‘This is what makes polyphenols and tea antioxidants so interesting’, says Bev Sanderson.
But rooibos is more than just an antioxidant. Studies at the Nelson Mandela University show that rooibos plays an important role in protecting and repairing adipose (fat) tissue. The loss of subcutaneous fat tissue in the face can lead to aging characteristics such as sunken eyes, fine lines and wrinkles. What’s more, independent studies support that rooibos inhibits glycation and demonstrates anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and anti-mutagenic properties.
With science behind the brand, MAYSAMA are confident that consumers will recognise rooibos a powerful antioxidant and true bioactive for cosmetic application.
