What is MAYSAMA Green Rooibos Brightening Mask?
MAYSAMA Green Rooibos Brightening Mask is a luxurious wash-off treatment mask, formulated with a novel, high-performance brightening complex to gradually improve the appearance of discolouration, dullness and uneven texture, whilst leaving your skin hydrated and silky smooth.
Our brightening complex combines tranexamic acid with other brightening agents which increase its efficacy, together with our signature Aspalathin-enriched Green Rooibos Extract as a potent anti-inflammatory agent.
Regular use of this treatment mask will provide an effective treatment for melasma, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, or simply brighten skin tone for improved radiance.
Why I formulated MAYSAMA Green Rooibos Brightening Mask.
I love the ritual of a mask. For me, masking is downtime. I generally mask two or three times a week, either relaxing in the bath or sat in front of the TV whilst giving my skin a treat, or in this case a treat-ment! My skin often feels dehydrated by the end of the day, so the application of cooling, hydrating skincare ingredients, and the natural fragrance of rooibos just takes me off to another place.
There are numerous brightening serums on the market formulated with tranexamic acid, but I have not found a brightening mask formulated with tranexamic acid and complementary brightening agents, so Maysama’s concept for our brightening treatment mask appears to be unique.
The closest comparable product I have found to MAYSAMA Green Rooibos Brightening Mask is Dr Thomas Roth PRO Strength Niacinamide Discolouration Treatment. Like Maysama’s brightening complex, Dr Roth’s brightening treatment is formulated with a brightening complex (iacinamide, tranexamic acid, kojic acid and alpha arbutin), but in a cream rather than a mask, which at $88.00 is considerably more expensive than MAYSAMA Green Rooibos Brightening Mask., which is priced around $68.00* for 50mls
As a caveat, it is worth noting that results from 3-4% tranexamic acid are generally seen after one month of continuous use. MAYSAMA Green Rooibos Brightening Mask is formulated with 4% tranexamic acid plus a novel brightening complex. If your goal is to treat melasma, then I would strongly recommend that you use your Maysama brightening mask 2-3 times per week and supplement this with a brightening serum the other days of the week within your skincare routine. Some other great products you may wish to try include Skinceuticals Discolouration Defence, or for a more budget friendly option, Dearskin Tranex Dear Serum.
If, on the other hand, you are just looking to improve radiance and to enjoy the ritual of a mask, then this is therapeutic indulgence at its best!

How does the Brightening Action work?
[Brightening Treatment Mask Tranexamic acid]
Our 11% novel brightening complex combines 3% tranexamic acid, 4% niacinamide, 2% Kombucha and 2% Alpha Arbutin. Combining agents with different targeting mechanisms enhances the effectiveness of the brightening agent.
The mechanism of action of each of the brightening ingredients in Maysama’s Green Rooibos Brightening Mask are detailed below;
Tranexamic Acid – [TXA] slows down the production of plasmin, an enzyme in the blood, and has been used in medical fields for many years before its brightening action was discovered and exploited in the beauty industry. The action of tranexamic acid in the blood vessels helps control pigmentation by inhibiting the release of inflammatory mediators involved in triggering melanogenesis after UV exposure, as well as interfering with the interaction of pigment-producing melanocytes and keratinocytes. Tranexamic acid may also slow down the production of melanin by tyrosinase because it is structurally similar to tyrosine and potentially competes with it. With powerful anti-inflammatory action, tranexamic acid also calms the skin and helps restore the skin barrier.
Niacinamide - helps prevent hyperpigmentation by inhibiting melanosome transfer from melanocytes to keratinocytes, as well as having a photoprotective effect.
Alpha arbutin – acts as a competitive inhibitor of tyrosinase, the enzyme that plays a central role in melanogenesis.
Kombucha (Saccharomyces / Black tea ferment) augments this effect by inhibiting tyrosine hydroxylase and dampening oxidative stress.
What else does this MAYSAMA Green Rooibos Brightening Mask do for my Skin?
Aside from its brightening action, MAYSAMA Green Rooibos Brightening Mask is loaded with humectants including Aloe Vera Leaf Juice, Glycerine, Sodium Hyaluronate and Sodium Polyglutamate, and conditioning agents such as squalane and allantoin, which will leave your skin feeling hydrated and nourished.
Niacinamide (4%) plays more than a brightening role, contributing to bolstering barrier support, antioxidant repair and helping to reduce the appearance of enlarged pores.
Our hero ingredient, Aspalathin-enriched Green Rooibos Extract, is a phytopharmaceutical with 70 x the antioxidant capacity of standard (red) rooibos. Rooibos also has anti-inflammatory, anti-glycation, wound-healing and anti-mutagenic properties. More recent studies show that rooibos plays a novel role in the protection and repair of preadipocytes, the main fat cells that make up adipose tissue, adding to its anti-aging armoury by protecting fat-pads in the face.
And Kombucha [Saccharomyces / Black Tea Ferment] is a beautiful Korean inspired fermented active ingredient. Aside from its contribution to radiance, Kombucha is a great anti-aging ingredient, which has anti-glycation properties and has a re-densifying effect on the adipocyte population as well as improves overall skin quality by enhancing skin smoothness.
Is this Treatment Mask for Me?
This mask is for you if you are targeting;
Pigmentation issue: several studies support that Tranexamic acid at 3-4% is an effective treatment for melasma / dark spots or Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation, particularly when combined with other brightening agents like niacinamide and alpha arbutin.
Inflammation / Erythema / Redness: Since tranexamic acid acts on blood vessels as well as pigment to fade melasma, it can potentially help reduce inflammation, erythema and fade redness. Independent studies support that Tranexamic acid helps reduce post-inflammatory erythema and acts as a potential treatment for erthematotelangiectatic rosacea [Type 1].
Improved Radiance: regardless of skin issues, if you simply want to brighten skin for improved radiance, this mask is for you.

How long does this Product last?
Based on the recommended use, this 50ml Brightening Mask tube holds enough product for around 20 generous treatments, making the cost per treatment around $3.00.
Directions for Use: Apply two pea size amounts to face and neck with clean fingertips. Leave on for 15-20 minutes and wash off with a wet flannel. Frequency of use 2-3 times per week for best results.
Can this Treatment Mask be used with other Products?
We get it! As a skincare aficionado you are wondering how to fit this into your skincare routine? Whilst we do not recommend overloading your skin with actives, there are no contra-indications of any of the ingredients used within Maysama Green Rooibos Brightening Mask with Vitamin C or Retinoids. Therefore, if a skin brightening treatment is not enough for you in one day, you can apply your favourite serums (Vitamin C, retinoids etc) after using this mask.
