Two new skincare formulations designed to optimize your skin health have landed at Maysama! New product development is driven by our community. We love to hear what you want next from Maysama to bolster your skincare routine and to complement your red light therapy treatments. Two of the most requited products from Maysama customer's, for quite some time, are a moisturizer to cosset you skin and lock in hydration, and a lighter formulation for use with LED Therapy. We are excited to be able to deliver on both these requests and we believe that we have something unique in each of these formulations.
As you would expect from Maysama, both formulations are formulated with our hero ingredient, Aspalathin-enriched Green Rooibos Extract, which is the herb that keeps on giving. Green Rooibos is rich in flavonoids, the main group of polyphenols, which serve as antioxidants, helping to protect from the onslaught of environmental aggressors, like UV light and pollution. Rooibos is considered unique because it contains aspalathin, a flavonoid, which is exclusive to rooibos and contributes greatly to its antioxidant capacity. Its antioxidant capabilities are bolstered by a high content of the antioxidant enzyme, superoxide dismutase, which plays a very important role in neutralising free radicals, particularly in the mitochondrial membrane where they are produced by the action of red light therapy. Aside from its antioxidant potential, rooibos is anti-inflammatory and has anti-glycation and anti-mutagenic action. And for its anti-aging credentials, green rooibos is loaded with AHA’s (Alpha Hydroxy Acids), vitamin D and Zinc.

Green Rooibos Probiotic Moisturizer
Who doesn’t need a good moisturizer? Once we have loaded our skin with humectants to plump and hydrate and get that dewy glow, it is important to lock in that hydration. Emollients in moisturisers do exactly that, covering the skin with a protective film to trap in moisture and prevent it from escaping. In fact, if you neglect to use a moisturiser, then you risk losing moisture from your skin through Transepidermal Water Loss [TWL]. Emollients like jojoba seed oil (Simmondsia chinensis), argan oil and glycerine are truly effective and can help manage dry skin and reduce skin sensitivity.

But what’s special about Maysama’s moisturizer I hear you ask? Every moisturizer is its own unique formula and Maysama’s Green Rooibos Probiotic Moisturizer is no exception.
Pre, Pro and Postbiotic
Our light-weight probiotic moisturizer is enhanced by the fermentation of colloidal oatmeal and has skin firming and plumping effect. Maysama’s fermented colloidal oatmeal, sourced from sustainable crop, is proven to help maintain a healthy skin microbiome composition.
For fermented colloidal oatmeal, think Aveeno on steroids!! The fermentation process releases bioactive compounds from the oatmeal as it breaks down, like antioxidants and amino acids, as well as hydroxy carboxylic acids such as lactic acid, which provides hydration. These molecules are smaller in size and more bioavailable, so they can penetrate deeper into the skin, past the stratum corneum.
What’s more our fermented colloidal oatmeal has prebiotic, probiotic and postbiotic properties, which are vital to achieving and maintaining a healthy microbiome. But what do each of these terms mean?
Prebiotic – These are molecules that promote the growth of beneficial microorganisms on the skin and provide a healthy and balanced skin microbiota.
Probiotic – Here we are referring to ‘live’ microorganisms, which are uniquely helpful to the skin microbiome.
Postbiotic – These refer to lysates and a range of metabolites produced by live bacteria during the fermentation process.
Fermented oatmeal exhibits prebiotic benefits to enhance growth of healthy bacteria on the skin. Prebiotic molecules in our fermented colloidal oatmeal include antioxidants and ectoin, a natural substance produced by the bacteria to protect against extreme conditions. Ectoin prevents dehydration of the epidermis by maintaining the correct water balance, resulting in smooth and soft appearance of the skin.
Fermented colloidal oatmeal has a probiotic-like effect due to the presence of Lactobacillus bacteria. Lactobacillus enhances the growth of ‘good’ bacteria yet has a strong antimicrobial effect on those considered potentially pathogenic. Data shows that heat-killed bacteria have probiotic effects with advantages over live probiotics.
Lastly, our fermented oatmeal is loaded with postbiotic molecules. These metabolites, produced by the live bacteria during the fermentation process, help to regulate the composition of the skin microbiome ecosystem. Postbiotic molecules in our colloidal oatmeal include Alpha Hydroxy Acids [AHAs], amino acids and bioactive peptides. AHAs act as exfoliants and hydrate the skin, as well as improve barrier function by enhancing the production of ceramides. Amino acids which protect the skin from free radical damage and reduce signs of aging. Bioactive Peptides help with the cellular renewal of the skin.
Overall, Maysama’s Green Rooibos Probiotic Moisturizer, is formulated with fermented colloidal oatmeal, which has antiaging effects by increasing the thickness of the stratum corneum and epidermis, resulting in skin firmness in the short term. The hydrating properties of fermented colloidal oatmeal result in improvements in skin plumpness in the long term. It has also been proven efficient in maintaining the skin microbiome composition over time.
Re-densifying

Black tea ferment (Saccharomyces ferment) brings antiglycation activity and a lipo-filing effect, improving overall skin quality by enhancing skin smoothness, radiance and colour. Backed by data, our Kombucha active ingredient, at 3%, re-densifies the adipocyte population in the skin by 136%, helping restore skin volume.
Fermented colloidal oatmeal further supports the thickening of the stratum corneum and epidermis, helping to improve skin firmness and hydration, resulting in plumper skin.
And science studies support that Green Rooibos protects and repairs preadipocytes, helping to maintain a healthy subcutaneous fat layer, as well as provide antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antiglycation action.

Use it as a PRE-LED treatment before your Maysama Green Rooibos Serum and other water-based serums, to help with the absorption and spreadability of your serums, or as an alternative, if you prefer. Loaded with humectants (which hold and bind water) like glycerine and oat beat glucan, Maysama’s Green Rooibos Atomizer will increase skin hydration - hydrated skin absorbs light better. And our hero green rooibos ingredient is proven to amplify your LED results. You can even use it as a scalp spray, so it pairs perfectly with Maysama’s LED Hair Growth Comb.
- Hydrating Toner – Our Green Rooibos Atomizer is ideal to use after any cleanser to rebalance the pH balance of your skin, prep your skin for the application of serums and minimize skin irritation. As a hydrating toner loaded with humectants and skin conditioning agents like Sodium PCA and panthenol, your skin will thank you for it. Use daily, in your morning or evening routine, after cleansing and before serums or moisturizer.

- Wound healing – Rooibos is the wonder herb when it comes to healing. It has been used for centuries by the indigenous Khoisan women of South Africa for its soothing and healing properties and traditionally used as an herbal medicine to treat a wide range of ailments. Our Green Rooibos Atomizer lends itself as a spray to accelerate wound healing, for post-surgical recovery or tissue damage. Ensure that wounds are closed before use!
In this formulation, our signature Green Rooibos Leaf Extract (0.6%) is supplemented with fermented rooibos at 2%. Unlike traditional rooibos, green rooibos is prepared from the fresh leaves, which have a much higher antioxidant potential. Maysama’s green rooibos undergoes patented extraction, which greatly enhances its antioxidant potential, making it 70 times more potent than regular rooibos. However, red (fermented) and green rooibos play very important but distinct roles in wound healing. Red rooibos is pro-inflammatory and helps kick-start the initial inflammatory response. Green, rooibos on the other hand, contributes greatly to the latter phases of wound healing, accelerating cell proliferation and helping tissue remodelling. For this reason, I wanted to include fermented rooibos in this formulation, to bolster the wound-healing properties of the formula. This is the only Maysama formulation which incorporates both traditional rooibos and our API ingredient, Aspalathin-enriched green rooibos.
Let’s take a look at some of the other key actives;
Glycerin – glycerin is a humectant which attracts and retains the moisture in the air and in the deeper layers of the skin. It is a skin-restoring ingredient found naturally in skin which mimics the skin’s natural moisturising factor (NMF). Glycerin can improve your skin’s appearance and texture as well as plump the skin. Glycerin also enhances the penetration of the formula’s actives into the skin.
Ascorbyl Glucoside (Vitamin C) – a derivative of L-ascorbic acid, which neutralizes skin-damaging free radicals, inhibits the production of pigment to fade and prevent dark spots, boosts collagen production. Unlike regular vitamin C, which can sometimes irritate the skin, ascorbyl glucoside is a ‘less irritating’ form of Vitamin C, suitable for sensitive or irritated skin.
Avena Sativa (Oat) Bran Extract – Oat beta glucan is 20% more hydrating than hyaluronic acid. It provides skin with deep hydration and is soothing and moisturising, with anti-aging properties. Beta glucans help lock in hydration and prevent moisture loss, which results in smoother and more supple skin. Additionally they stimulates collagen production, activate immune cells, and reach the dermis where wrinkles form to help diminish fine lines and roughness and increases skin firmness. Best of all it is an anti-irritant ingredient that is suitable for any type of skin.
Sodium PCA – Sodium PCA helps strengthen the skin’s lipidic barrier by boosting lipid synthesis in the skin epidermis, improving the skin’s integrity and stratum corneum’s ability to retain water within the skin. The physical barrier is strengthened for a hydrated and comfortable skin. In addition to increasing epidermal lipid synthesis, scientific studies have shown that topical application of PCA can also improve the organization of these lipid structures.
Panthenol – Panthenol is a precursor of pantothenic acid, also known as vitamin B5. It acts as a powerful humectant, helping to maintain hydration in the skin. It also works as an emollient which means it can moisturise and soothe the skin, as well as help protect it from environmental factors and skin stresses.
